Shell Lake Sailing Club Newsletter

Here we are again, looking forward to the summer months and spending a little more time with friends. I thought that I would get this newsletter out so we can mark our calendars with the Sailing Banquet and our 5 races. The Banquet this year will be at the Butternut Golf Course on June 2nd. We had it there last year and had a very nice time. If you have never been out there, it is a large vaulted dining room overlooking the golf course and we should have the place pretty much to ourselves. Last year they had some wine that we could purchase by the bottle for the meal which worked out great.

The (5) races will be the Regatta's on July 7th and Labor Day Sunday, Sept. 2nd and the three SIRs of the summer months. The Saturday Informal Races (SIR) will be on the second Saturday of the summer months, June 9th, July 14th and Aug. 11th. Mark your calendar and we look forward to see you on the water. There will be a slight change to our sailing program. We will be staging our races off the north end of the Shell Lake Public Beach instead of the Doboy property. We obtained permission from the City Council and it will be roped off for our use on race days. It is a sandy beach and we might not be able to launch boats off of trailers from there. We will find out how it works on June 9th. If anyone is interested in helping on the committee boat, give me a call and you can go out with me so I can explain what goes on.

The July 7th Regatta is a little later this year to be a part of the Juried Art Show, that local artist David Hassig heads up along with the Lakefront Improvement Committee. It takes place in a beautiful setting overlooking the lake on the sidewalk by the Pavilion. The Committee is working hard on getting some great entertainment for the evening as part of the Celebration.

The Shell Lake Sailing Club Banquet, we will start off with a cocktail hour at 6:30 PM, dinner at 7:00 PM. Following our dinner, we will present our club awards for "Sailors of the Year", hand out some door prizes, have our meeting where we will discuss our upcoming events and anything else that needs hashing over. After this we can sit back and enjoy our speaker of the evening. This year we are delighted to have one of our members, Lavern Modrow tell us about his experience sailing his 43 foot Catamaran from France to the New York Harbor. Then he, along with his wife Lois headed towards the Great Lakes picking up Buzz and Karen Flolid in Buffalo for the final leg to Port Superior Marina in Bayfield. I’ve seen some of his pictures and look forward to seeing his presentation.

Sailing Club Social Events

We would like to improve on these events, so if you have some ideas bring them to the Banquet. We will be having a wine tasting party again this year, brought back by popular demand. It will be on June 27th at the Spooner Market and Grill. Betsy makes some wonderful Hors d’oeuvres and we will be enjoying wines from Italy which our own Wine Coinsurer, Chip Woods, will select. The cost for this party will be $15.00 per person at the door. You are invited to bring a wine of your choice to share with others.

Broken Rudder races

The CRAW (Catamaran Racing Association of Wisconsin) will be challenging the Catamaran Association of Minnesota in a series of races that will be held on July 28th and 29th. The prize that goes to the winning club is a traveling Broken Rudder and a lot of bragging rights. If you have a catamaran you can enter the races as some of our members did last year or you can volunteer as a crewmember. These are excellent races because the sailors are some of the best in the Mid-west, so you should get out on the water and watch the action up close. Usually the Wisconsin sailors have a red flag showing on their sailboat.

Boats for Sale

Rod Kesti is putting Connie’s sailboat up for sale. It is a 14-foot Holder, single hull, which was made by Hobie. You can see the boat at 1317 E. Lake Drive. Give him a call at 715-468-4434

Friends of the Sailing Club

We want to start out by thanking the Butternut Golf Course, as this is where we will be having our Banquet. Thanks to Betsy at the Spooner Market & Grill for holding our Wine Tasting party. Thanks to Diane Ericksen of Thunder Gifts Gallery for her help and support in the past with various door prizes from her shop. I want to thank Kathy Maves of Laughing Brook Pottery out on Hwy. B who will be making our awards this year.

Events for the year

Just remember to mark your calendars with the following dates and give me a call if you will be coming to the Banquet. The dinner will be salad with dinner roll, Buffet style Prime Rib or Salmon in creamy garlic sauce, with Garlic mashed potatoes and a Lemon chiffon desert. The price will be $19.50 (includes tax & tip) per person and I need the money ahead of time so I can give her an actual count. Last year we had a few cancellations at the last minute and she had way to much food made and lost money. We feel bad about that so let’s get those checks in to me as soon as possible. Just a little note to remind you that with the dues at only $5.00 a year it is important to make sure you are up to date so we have enough money to take care of Business. I spend money on mailings, "Sailor of the Year awards, door prizes for the banquet and maybe a few dollars on the Wine Tasting Party. I don’t like to nag but if you have a small notice on the back of the envelope, it means you aren’t paid up for 2007, so please help us out.
